Launch of Julius Nyerere’s book, ‘Women’s Freedom: Women are Eagles not Chickens’

Former President of Tanzania, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (RIP) wrote a book on “WOMEN’S FREEDOM” while he was an undergraduate student at Makerere University in 1944. The manuscript written in Kiswahili was found in his documents after his death in 1999.  The Makerere University Gender Mainstreaming Directorate (GMD) got a copy of the printed Kiswahili version of the book, translated it into English and got permission from The Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF) to publish it. The launch of the book coincided with the commemoration of 50 years of the University of East Africa (UEA) and celebration of Julius Nyerere’s life on Saturday 29th June 2013 at Makerere University.

Makerere University offered Technical Support to the Public Universities

With support from the Government of Sweden, Makerere University Gender Mainstreaming Directorate (GMD) offered technical support to four Public Universities of Busitema, Kyambogo, Gulu and Mbarara to develop Situational Analysis Reports, Gender Policies and Gender Plans of Action. The publications have been printed and ready for dissemination.

The First Cohort of the Female Scholarship Foundation Beneficiaries Graduated January 2014

Makerere University Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) was established in November 2010 to sustain the Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI) that was supported by Carnegie Corporation of New York and enabled 691 female students from poor socio-economic background to access university education at Makerere University. Out of the FSI success story, Makerere University realized the need for a scholarship foundation to support more female students who would otherwise drop out of school after secondary education. As a sign of commitment and ownership of the foundation, Makerere University offered 20 scholarships per year in form of a tuition waiver under FSF, starting with the academic year 2010/11.

The Success story of the Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI) and the fundraising efforts by GMD earns Makerere University US$ 1m from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY)

The Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) supported Makerere University’s Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI) with US $ 4 million for scholarships for 691 girls from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds to access university education from 2001 to 2010. FSI was a success story with 45% in upper second degree and 94% completion. FSI was sustained through the Makerere University Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) that was launched in November 2010 and its Board of Trustees inaugurated on 3rd December 2011.

Africa Lecture Series

The Gender Mainstreaming Directorate in partnership with the U.S Mission in Uganda  organized  the 3rd lecture in the Makerere Lecture Series titled “Fulbright Foreign Scholarship in Africa during US President Barak Obama’s Administration” by Dr. Shelby Lewis, member and the former Vice Chair of the J.W Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Female Scholarship Foundation, Africa Lecture Series

CCNY, Scholarship, Female Scholarship Foundation, Grant

The Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) offered Makerere University a matching grant of US $ 1 m for scholarships under the Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) in response to FSI success story,its sustainability and Makerere University’s gesture of committment and ownership by offering 20 scholarships per year.

MS.JD International Global Education Fund, a non-profit organization based in California, U.S.A. dedicated to the success of women in law school and the legal profession has taken on two more law female students for academic year 2012/2013 bringing the total number to six MS.JD Scholars.
