The Success story of the Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI) and the fundraising efforts by GMD earns Makerere University US$ 1m from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY)

The Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) supported Makerere University’s Female Scholarship Initiative (FSI) with US $ 4 million for scholarships for 691 girls from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds to access university education from 2001 to 2010. FSI was a success story with 45% in upper second degree and 94% completion. FSI was sustained through the Makerere University Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) that was launched in November 2010 and its Board of Trustees inaugurated on 3rd December 2011.

Due to FSI’s success story, its sustainability through the Makerere University Female Scholarship Foundation (FSF) and Makerere University’s gesture of commitment and ownership by offering 20 scholarships per year; CCNY responded with an offer of US $1m as a matching grant from 2011 to 2014. The FSI success story has continued with support from Makerere University with a tuition waiver of 20 scholarships per year;  Ms JD, an NGO based in California; Districts from Greater Northern Uganda, namely: Alebtong, Nakapiripirit, Nebbi, Zombo, and individuals of goodwill and DFCU.

As at December 2013, GMD had raised US$ 55,991 and Carnegie has matched it with US$ 162,942.  Because  of the efforts in fundraising by GMD and the success of FSI, CCNY has offered Makerere University the US$ 1 m that will support a total of 292 disdvantaged girls by the end of 2014.
